Developing practitioners explore an expanded repertoire of asana (from the Foundation Program) to develop their practice as a self-study (svadhyaya). Students begin to watch sensations across a spectrum from gross to subtle as well as differentiate sensations from thoughts and emotions. The mode of practice is described as ‘Studying’ (see Yoga Sadhana booklet)
The Developing practitioner program has three components which are all conducted through 10 week terms.
1. Yogasana coursework: Our Developing syllabus builds upon the foundations embedded in the Foundation syllabus and expands to include twisting standing poses, intermediate backbends, forward bends, Inversions. As students progress they develop skills in observation without reaction (dispassionate observation). A Developing practitioner learns to act rather than react. Students develop judgement in the use of props to adjust their practice. We recommend 1 or 2 course enrolments per term as development is linked to practice based learning and the full syllabus is covered in 4 terms. Students who enrol in two courses per term can enrol in a Led practice at no additional cost.
2. Pranayama coursework: Students learn how to use props and supports for both lying and sitting and develop a capacity to work in the formal pranayamas of Ujjayi and Viloma. Practitioners at this level often encounter pranayama as deeply quietening mentally and emotionally. To integrate the effects of the practice and to evolve a competency in this syllabus 3-4 terms of attendance is recommended.
3. Led practice: In these sessions the asana names are called with the practice leader presenting the posture, but there is no instruction. Developing practitioners benefit immensely from Led practice where the cultivation of tapas (discipline) and the absence of instruction facilitates svadhyaya (self study). Students who enrol in two courses per term can enrol in a Led practice at no additional cost. Credit is given via a coupon which is applied to your total bill at final check out. Simultaneous enrolment in Yogasana Coursework is required.
